History

[edit]

S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) was inaugurated in 1981 by the then British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, as the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's Institute for Master of Management Studies. Students from the first batch of 1983 were placed in several top companies, including BPCL, HDFC Ltd., Johnson & Johnson, Wipro, Asian Paints, Nerolac Paints Ltd, and Godrej & Boyce. In 1986, Dr. M.L. Shrikant joined the institute as the Dean and led SPJIMR for almost three decades, introducing new and innovative methods of teaching and imparting management education.

In 1992, SPJIMR acquired autonomous status. Post the institute’s delinking from Mumbai University, the MMS programme was renamed PGDM. In 1994 and 1995, new programmes - Development of Corporate Citizenship (DoCC) and ADMAP (Assessment and Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential) were launched respectively. In 1998, SPJIMR launched Gita Shibir led by Dr. M. L. Shrikant. The programme has now been renamed ‘Science of Spirituality’.In 2009, the PGDM programme was awarded NBA accreditation. In 2010, SPJIMR’s three programmes were given AMBA accreditation. The Delhi centre was also inaugurated in the same year with long-term and short-term programmes. In 2019, a new building was inaugurated with state-of-the-art classrooms, group work rooms, a Design Thinking Lab, a new library, and an MDP room. It also has a new auditorium named after Dr. M. L. Shrikant.March 2020 saw the world grapple with COVID-19 bringing life to a halt. SPJIMR was among the few institutes that got all the programmes online within 24 hours of the lockdown. Academics, inaugurations, farewells, and meetings went online seamlessly. In September 2021, Dr. Varun Nagaraj took over as the Dean of the institute.

In 2022, SPJIMR launched the four prestigious Centres of Practice: Centre for Innovation in Sustainable Development (CISD); Centre for Family Business and Entrepreneurship (CFBE);Centre for Financial Innovation (CFI), and Centre for Wisdom in Leadership (CWIL).The same year, PGP-MBM - an accelerated management programme for executives with less than five years of work experience was launched.
